Bullard, George.
Pursuing the Full Kingdom Potential of Your Congregation

George Bullard, the book’s author, writes,  “Just because the journey toward your congregation’s full kingdom potential is difficult does not mean it is an unworthy journey. It is actually a very worthwhile journey. It is perhaps the only journey that makes sense for congregations who desire . . . To be faithful, effective, and innovative in their ministry.  To help people grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  To connect with preChristians, unchurched, and dechurched persons.  To experience continual vitality in their life and ministry.  To continually transform to remain on the cutting edge of Christian ministry.  To respond to the future vision God has for your congregations.”

Bullard continues, “So, how can congregations engage in a transforming spiritual strategic journey? Rather than making various changes for which the congregation is unprepared; on the spiritual and strategic passion of congregational leaders, rather than the position and organizational authority of these leaders; on the spiritual gifts, strengths, and skills of the congregation, rather than the problems that imprison the soul of the congregation; on the future story God is unfolding in your midst that pulls you forward, rather than growth and success goals that push you forward; on living into God’s future for the congregation, rather than recreating a culture of the good ole’ days.”

Bullard’s work, while complex, will help the serious pastor or layperson explore these topics and questions. Bullard’s thoughts on redevelopment are at the heart of much of what we do at CCK.

Dudley, Carl S.
Congregations in Transition.

This handbook takes a user-friendly sociological approach to the congregation and neighborhood in transition.  The authors realize that this is a spiritual process and offer the theme of the exodus and wilderness as inspiration. The body of the manual is a step by step investigation with congregational exercises for the congregation that wants to journey towards transformation (Jane Lawrence DHM).

Herrington, Jim and Mike Bonem.  Leading Congregational Change.

Craig Van Gelder, professor of congregational mission at Luther Seminary, writes "A creative and helpful guide for assisting congregations through the necessary process of change by weaving together firm biblical foundations, the best of what's available from the social sciences, and insightful examples from the years of experience the authors have had in working with churches."  We found this book to be a wonderful step-by-step description, in general terms, of the stages of congregational change. The book includes Scripture and many helpful resources from the business world artfully woven into his exploration of the stages of change (Jane Lawrence, DHM)

Mann, Alice and Gilbert Rendel Holy Conversations.

Rendel and Mann have put together an excellent resource book for any church that wants to discover “Who are we?”, What has God called us to do or be?”, and “Who is our neighbor?” In my opinion Mann is the best of the Alban team in regards to redeveloping congregations.  The cost of the book allows you to download many of the book’s resources from the Alban website.  Those pastors and congregations looking for a prayerful, community based model of redevelopment should read this book  (Lon Oliver, CCK).
